“I have seen a lot in my life. I have known pain, fear, and strength. But my voice is now my power.” — Waris Dirie
Waris Dirie was born in Somalia into a nomadic family. At just 13, she escaped an arranged marriage by running away alone through the desert. She ended up in London, working as a maid and later discovered by a fashion photographer—launching her modeling career.
But Waris didn't stop at the runway. After revealing in an interview that she was a survivor of female genital mutilation (FGM), she became an outspoken activist. Her courage in sharing her story opened global conversations about this deeply rooted issue affecting millions of girls.
She went on to become a UN Special Ambassador for the Elimination of FGM and founded the Desert Flower Foundation. Her bestselling book Desert Flower became a symbol of strength, survival, and speaking up for the voiceless.
Through unimaginable pain and hardship, Waris Dirie transformed her trauma into global activism, showing that even the most silent voices can rise and change the world.
Waris Dirie’s courage reminds us that where we begin does not define where we can go. Her voice has changed lives—and laws.
